Terms of the TNPL revealed

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), in a media briefing here on Thursday, provided details of its upcoming Twenty20 league and also released the tournament logo.

TNCA joint secretary R.I. Palani said, “we are confident of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) becoming a big success.

“We have already seen a lot of interest for the competition.”

Palani said Prasanna Kannan would be the CEO of the tournament that will be held in Chennai and Natham. The TNCA joint secretary said, “15 of the 27 games will be played under lights.”

The tender documents for the franchise rights of the eight-team competition, to be conducted from the last week of August to the second week of September, will be available from May 2 to May 25.

A deposit of Rs. 50 lakh will have to be provided by all bidders. The money will be returned to the unsuccessful bidders.

Base price at Rs. 1.25 crore

The base price for a franchise, for a period of 10 years, has been fixed at Rs. 1.25 crore per year.

The players will be given to the franchises on a rotational basis with the team that bids the most having the first right over a particular cricketer, followed by the second, third and the rest according to the cost of the sides.

For the first five years, central rights, less match staging costs, will be shared 80 per cent among the eight teams with the rest going to the TNCA.

As much as 65 per cent will be divided equally between the sides with the rest 15 per cent given away as per a side’s standing in the league.

Only cricketers registered in Tamil Nadu are eligible for the competition.

A salary cap of Rs. Five lakh for India players has been fixed.

For players who have represented the State, a maximum limit of Rs. 2.50 lakh has been set. The highest amount for the other players would be Rs. One lakh.

No current international or first class cricketer, nor his close relatives, will be eligible to bid for a side.

Reserve price

A reserve price of Rs. 7 crore has been set for the media rights. And Rs. 1 crore will have to be deposited by every bidder.

The unsuccessful bidders will get back the amount.

The tenders for media rights, that include television, audio, internet, mobile and public exhibition, will be available from May 2 to 15.

They will be opened on May 26.
