Considerable significance is being attached to the news that Sharad Pawar, president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, will attend the BCCI annual general meeting likely in the first week of March.

In the light of the difficulties faced by N. Srinivasan after the Supreme Court’s verdict in the spot-fixing case, Mr. Pawar’s decision appears to open new possibilities, say Board sources.

“He has told the MCA managing committee that he will attend the BCCI AGM,” said P.V. Shetty, joint secretary, MCA.

Almost a decade ago, Mr. Pawar was backed by Shashank Manohar, Mr. Srinivasan and Lalit Modi, and he was elected in a bitter contest against the Jagmohan Dalmiya group at a postponed AGM and election in Kolkata. Things have changed for the worse, and their relationship has crumbled. On January 22, after passing an order on the IPL, the Supreme Court set a six-week deadline for the AGM and election.
