August 01, 2013 07:09 pm | Updated June 01, 2016 11:24 pm IST - Allahabad

A Public Interest Litigation in the Allahabad High Court has challenged the recommendations made by the Board of Cricket's Control in India (BCCI) for Sports awards this year.

The PIL was filed in the Lucknow Bench by social activist Nutan Thakur and IPS officer Amitabh Thakur.

The BCCI has recommended cricketer Virat Kohli for the Arjuna Award for his outstanding performance and former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar for Dhyan Chand award for life time achievement.

Only the National Sports Federation (NSF) can make recommendations for the national sports awards, the petitions said. The BCCI is not one of the 51 NSFs recognized by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

"BCCI is an unrecognized private body which does not want to become a NSF and yet wants to have all advantages of NSF," the petitioners said.

The petition seeks the Court's directions to the Sports Ministry to not entertain the BCCI's recommendations.
