Australia thrashes West Indies in first ODI

February 01, 2013 09:10 am | Updated 12:34 pm IST - PERTH

Chris Gayle is caught in slips by Australia's Aaron Finch (not in pic) during the first ODI match in Perth on Friday.

Mitchell Starc took five wickets and Glenn Maxwell smashed 51 runs off 35 balls to lead Australia to a comprehensive nine-wicket win over the West Indies with more than 40 overs to spare in the first one-day international Friday.

Starc (5-20) helped dismiss the West Indies, which won the toss and elected to bat first, for a paltry 70 runs off 23.5 overs before Maxwell’s half-century guided Australia to 71-1 in little over 9 overs and in just 41 minutes.

Australia had already scored more than a quarter of the victory target after just five balls following Maxwell’s early scoring burst during which he hit Kemar Roach for three fours and a six.
