England arrives in Chittagong amidst tight security

March 08, 2011 02:05 am | Updated 02:05 am IST - CHITTAGONG:

England's World Cup squad flew into the Bangladeshi port city of Chittagong on Monday and was whisked away to the hotel under tight security.

Traffic on the normally crowded roads was cleared for the team bus, which was escorted by gun-toting securitymen to the hotel in downtown Chittagong, where England takes on Bangladesh in a key Group ‘B' match on Friday.

World Cup officials have beefed up security for players and officials in Bangladesh, following the stoning of the West Indies team bus in Dhaka last Friday.

The England squad, minus star batsman Kevin Pietersen, left Chennai early on Monday and made a transit stop in Kolkata before the hour-long flight to Chittagong.

Bangladesh, with two points, needs a win to stay in contention for the quarterfinals. A victory for England will almost certainly lift it into the last eight.
