Malware threat

Fortinet, a leading network security provider and a worldwide leader of unified threat management solutions, released its August 2010 Threat Landscape report. The report revealed that ‘ransomware', a malware that locks out applications and data from a user's computer and then demands ransom for restored access, has made a big comeback. TotalSecurity loader (W32/FakeAlert.LU) was the most significant malware detected this month by Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs. “One indicator we observed this month was that the Ransomware application had gone server-side polymorphic. This means that the loader will connect to a single server and request a single file, but the code changes on an hourly basis in order to avoid detection,” said Derek Manky, project manager, cyber security and threat research, Fortinet.

Norton goes even further by providing a free tool to consumers, Norton Power Eraser, that is designed to aggressively target and eliminate fake antivirus or “scareware” applications, a release from Symantec stated. “Today's cybercriminals are not standing down – consumers need the very best protection to stay safe online,” said Janice Chaffin, President, Consumer Business Unit, Symantec.

Enterprise solutions

Microfocus, a leading enterprise application modernisation, testing and management solutions provider, released the newest versions of two mainframe migration tools recently in Bangalore. Micro Focus Studio Enterprise Edition (Studio EE) and Server Enterprise Edition (Server EE) v6.0 SP1 deliver enhanced mainframe migration capabilities to companies looking to simplify their IT infrastructure, reduce risk, lower IT costs and deliver more innovative products and services.

Micro Focus Studio EE is a suite of graphical tools that allows users to migrate mainframe business applications to lower cost platforms and supports the entire applications development lifecycle — from analysis to testing. It supports the deployment of the migrated applications on the new platform with virtually no application code changes, making application migration a low-risk, high-performance alternative to re-writes or rip-and-replace strategies. New functionality includes a unique capability to migrate data to Microsoft SQL Server.
