Right to sanitation

The statistics-packed editorial “The right to sanitation” (June 27) was forthright and insightful. That improved sanitation and good drinking water is unavailable to at least one-third of the world’s population is a disgrace for civilised society. If sanitation is well taken care of, there may not be necessity for a bigger allocation for healthcare. Like how a strong foundation is must for a big building, a healthy environment is must for India’s workforce to remain productive.

The Total Sanitation Campaign and the Low Cost Sanitation Scheme used to provide toilets to the rural masses to some extent. But space constraints have limited their scope. In this context, the Mobile Toilet introduced in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu some years ago is an ideal alternative.
