Revolutionary step

The Right of Citizens for Time-Bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill, 2011, if passed by Parliament, will be another revolutionary step towards empowerment of citizens after the Right to Information Act. Bribery and delaying the cases of those who don’t pay are commonplace in government offices.

Thanks to the proposed citizens’ charter, government officials will become more accountable.

The law will be a great relief to the common man who is made to run from pillar to post in government offices on flimsy grounds. The renewal of a driving licence takes 45 days.

This is exactly the kind of situation the law seeks to eliminate. The BJP’s objection to the bill is regressive.

Why is the BJP opposed to the bill? If enacted, it will help millions of citizens from the harassment they undergo in government offices for no fault of theirs. It would help in changing the mindset of officials who feel they are doing a favour to the common people by delivering the services to which they are rightfully entitled.

People don’t care whether the proposed law is an intrusion in the domain of the States — they will be happy if they are saved from harassment.
