Reviving tolerance

August 08, 2017 01:11 am | Updated 01:11 am IST

India is in a phase of change with two new faces occupying the top constitutional posts in the country. As Independence Day is around the corner, it is only fair to focus on the subject of “tolerance”, and something which was stressed upon in the farewell speech of former President Pranab Mukherjee. Tolerance is ingrained in our nation and a look at its history shows that one can’t think of a more tolerant nation in this world which took 100 years to protest against an exploitative regime. Leaders of all religious hues worked together to achieve this goal. Perhaps we need to take a leaf out of their book and work towards promoting social tolerance; increasing incidents across the country show that it has started fraying.
