Retaining talent

April 20, 2012 01:14 am | Updated December 04, 2021 10:48 pm IST

I am not an analyst or a researcher to judge the present situation of our universities but I want to share my experience of four years as a college student, in response to the article, “Give the professor a raise” (April 16). I have seen professors who are eager to learn and professors who want to sleep in their offices. I don't think a hike in salaries or recognition will help the laid-back professors. In fact, they will only sleep more comfortably. I once heard two students lamenting how a good professor had left their college because he did not want to work with a man who did not know even the “name of the subject” he was teaching. Even if brilliant professors are recruited, they will become dumb or leave the institution unless the administration weeds out the non-performers through periodic assessments.
