Paying with life

The suicide by a student humiliated for being unable to pay fees in a private school in Karnataka demonstrates the human costs of a rampant commercialisation of education. (“Unable to pay fees, student ends life,” Oct.3). Governments need to upgrade the quality of education in public institutions instead of leaving the working classes to the limited and uncertain facilities of profiteering establishments. Institutions run by such managements only cultivate a selfish attitude among students and fail to create the milieu necessary for promoting a spirit of justice, equality and fraternity.
