Paramakudi firing

September 13, 2011 12:27 am | Updated 12:27 am IST

This has reference to the report “Five killed in police firing at Paramakudi” (Sept.12). People in our country are emotionally surcharged when it comes to religion and caste, and a spark often turns into a conflagration. Deft handling is called for in such sensitive cases. It is everyone's endeavour that the image of Tamil Nadu as one of the most peace-loving states is maintained.

The southern districts of Tamil Nadu have always been caste sensitive. Despite the passage of more than six decades after Independence, politicians are playing the game of divide and rule and caste politics to the hilt. In such a situation, the police should have shown the utmost care while dealing with a tense situation.

Talking about the modernisation of the force, merely arming the police will not serve the purpose. They should be taught modern riot control management. We must take the cue from the London Metropolitan Police, who dealt with the recent riots without resorting to brutal force.

T. Anand Raj , Chennai

Perhaps, the police action at Paramakudi was unwarranted.
