On Osama

When I saw the report “Geelani leads prayers for Osama” (May 7), I was left speechless. Those who pray for bin Laden must pray that terrorism must vanish from our earth.

All conflict in this world can be terminated only when human nature is transformed. This is not possible until all nations engage in a dialogue at the cultural, spiritual and political levels. Solutions to our problems will be in vain unless all men are taught the spirit of service and love.

That certain sections of the population held prayers for Osama is embarrassing. However, it is not fair to blame the entire community for the acts of a few. Persons like Osama thrived only because of their ability to exploit and indoctrinate youth from certain communities. Therefore, it is no surprise that he is held in high esteem by such youth.

Mr. Geelani's act is nothing more than a desperate political gimmick. Fraught with the potential to inflame passions, it is a dangerous game that will lead to communal tension and unrest. The way Osama bin Laden was eliminated only shows that religious fanaticism and bigotry lead to death and destruction.

So-called secular politicians/activists appear to be mysteriously silent in the face of such a brazen and bizarre demonstration of religious fundamentalism.
