On Manto

The article on Saadat Hasan Manto (May 11) was moving. I recollect what I read some years ago. A person visited a book shop and asked for a book by Manto. The shopkeeper said the price was Rs. 250.

The person had only Rs.150 and told the shopkeeper he would collect the book later. But the shopkeeper told him to take the book and pay the balance later. Surprised, the customer asked the shopkeeper how he could trust a stranger. The shopkeeper said: “How can I distrust one who is so eager to read Manto?”

The eloquently worded piece by Ayesha Jalal was a fitting tribute to the man who documented the atrocities of post-Partition with great sensitivity and emotional depth.

I am ashamed to admit I have not read any of Manto's works. After reading about his literary achievements, I am tempted to read them.
