On Kashmir

This refers to the article “The other Kashmir” (June 14). Perhaps the problem the people in the Kashmir Valley have is not over azadi but with the thinking of the rest of India. People from the Valley do have a sort of identity crisis. Confidence-building measures in Kashmir should include changing the negative perceptions about life in the Valley.

It is not just Kashmir that stands divided. Who can forget Punjab and Bengal? There must be more divided families in Uttar Pradesh than in entire Jammu and Kashmir. It must be recognised that calls for a plebiscite are Kashmir Valley-centric. The people of Jammu and Ladakh have time and again spurned moves by extremists to spread their roots.
