New Governors

The new appointments seem to have been done with the sole purpose that they are once again puppets in the hands of the PMO (“ >5 BJP veterans named Governors ,” July 15). It is also strange that the youngest of them is 78 and the oldest 87 which makes the whole exercise pointless. A Governor’s powers are limited, but the BJP should not have allotted all the five posts to party veterans. There are a number of bureaucrats who can do the job better and in a non-partisan way. If the government wants to lead the country towards development, it must desist from taking the easy way out — depending on senior party functionaries/veterans.

If a Governor is supposed to be a link between Centre and State, it is best that the Governor is of the choice of the ruling party. Let the matter rest here.

It is somewhat rational that the new government wants its men as Governors, but the government has to understand that a Governor is not like any officer in the Central government. This is a highly respected constitutional post and above petty politics. The new appointments show that the Governors who were forced out should have stayed on to fight the battle and withstand the pressure from the new government.

There seem to be two faces to the BJP. A party that promised achche din is repeating what the UPA did earlier. “A big blow to democracy” and “a dangerous move” will come back to haunt the government.
