Nagas in their land

The Centre's accomodation of the militant outfit NSCN-IM shows in the very use of the term ‘ceasefire’, one reserved for dealings between two nations (“Nagaland: descent into chaos, Jan. 23). The NSCN-IM’s demands include a separate sovereign state, flag and currency.

Nagaland has its own special provision, Article 371A, under the Indian Constitution. Neither the UPA-I nor the UPA-II has been able to bring economic and social empowerment to northeastern India in general, leave alone Nagaland. It will be interesting to observe if there will be any change in the Centre’s policy if a different political combination comes to power.
