Mining in Goa

The judgment of the Supreme Court lifting the ban on iron ore mining in Goa, with some riders, needs to be welcomed (April 22). Let us hope that adequate safeguards are in place including checks using satellite imagery. Environmental concerns must be addressed.

The manufacturing sector is expected to grow after the lifting of this ban as iron ore imports will only make micro-, small- and medium-manufacturing units non-competitive. The Supreme Court should ensure that illegal mining is kept under check and mining regulated in all areas using a combination of technology and human monitoring. Banning mining will only affect an already ailing Indian economy.
