Media's role

Published - November 21, 2011 12:32 am IST

This refers to the reports “INS: Katju's remarks smack of bias” (Nov. 18), “Comprehensive regulatory framework essential for media: Ansari” (Nov. 17) and “‘I am a votary of liberty; my criticism of the media is aimed at making them better'” (Nov. 16). Press Council chairman Justice Markandey Katju's views vis-à-vis the media seem to have hurt the feelings of at least some sections of the media, as is evidenced in the stream of reports on the issue of regulation of the media. As chairman, Justice Katju has a right to express his opinion and that must be observed in the right spirit.

The profession of journalism as such requires a high level of learning in the absence of which society stands to lose the right to correct information. These days, even a layman can understand how subjective the media are these days. There is a lot that needs to be cleaned up in what is showed by the electronic media. If one understands the importance of the media, it is not too much to ask for media professionals to be well-equipped, decent and with a good level of learning.
