The deregulation of fuel prices is a bold and forward-looking step by the Modi government ( >Editorial, Oct.21 ). The conducive environment of lower Brent crude prices in the international market may have been the trigger. The deregulation of petroleum products implies the reduction in financing the subsidies bill that could contain the fiscal deficit. Will there now be a mechanism to ensure the lowering of essential commodities?

The step is a welcome change when compared to vacillation by the earlier government. Then, holding back reforms was only resulting in chaos. Now, with its comfortable majority, the Modi government should be able to move forward and ensure that the cost of essential commodities is under check.
