Fierce nationalist

Many thanks to The Hindu for carrying the article “A British journalist & the Tamil poet” on Subramania Bharati’s 130th birth anniversary (Dec. 11). The fierce nationalist and renowned poet who rubbed shoulders with those who mattered the most during the freedom struggle died an untimely death. His one and only ambition was to see the land of his birth liberated from foreign rule. Unfortunately, he did not live to see his dream fulfilled. He was a social reformer far ahead of his times. He advocated women’s liberation and invited ridicule when he went against the caste prejudices predominant in his time.
