Famine in Somalia

The pathetic situation of a developing famine in the Horn of Africa is shocking (July 21 & 22). The world has to act swiftly to take immediate measures to rescue the people from starvation and death. This also raises the question of the value of human life and the necessity of meeting the basic needs of life. The world is fast developing but are people too?

If only the mountains of rotting foodgrains in our godowns were properly stored, it would have come in handy to save Somalia. The government should act even if the situation does not affect us in a direct way. India must also think in terms of offering assistance through agencies like the World Food Programme.
