At times, our governments fail to understand the implications of a policy or a scheme, yet allocate funds for them (“The perils of e-fixation,” Oct.15). Though students in government schools are given laptops, they hardly get adequate training to use them. The teachers are not much concerned about such lapses. We need to remember that education can never be considered complete unless it is coupled with ethics. These can be taught only by a teacher, not technology.

Computer-based education is still in a stage of infancy in India. Investment in computer systems and investment in teacher-training programmes are two different but crucial components of an education policy and neither of them should be compromised. Children from the countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), whose study is quoted in the article, have been using computers for decades. Applying their study results to an Indian scenario is not appropriate.
