Dealing with Pakistan

The unprovoked killing of five Indian soldiers on the LoC by Pakistan’s Special Forces last week has shocked the nation. It is no surprise that India is being accused of being a soft state. But this is incorrect. India may not be an aggressive state. It is a flexible state with a survival instinct.

The present situation requires a nuanced approach, not a simplistic one. We need to make the world community recognise and acknowledge that Pakistan is a terrorist state.

If the government did not have the facts on the killings in the first instance, what was the need to rush with a statement which had the effect of bailing out the Pakistan Army? As for the dialogue process with Islamabad, what is the point in engaging with a government that has no control over its army?

Unless we make our voices heard and presence felt, skirmishes on the LoC will not end. Defence Minister A.K. Antony should not have made a hurried statement without ascertaining the ground realities.

Only constant vigil and surveillance can ensure our jawans’ safety. They should be given the powers to eliminate infiltrators without waiting for orders.
