Why are people with criminal backgrounds and billionaires attracted to politics (“One-third of Gujarat MLAs face criminal charges, including rape,” Dec. 25)? Are they overcome by the desire to serve people? No, they enter the legislature because their status as lawmakers will shield them from the law, and help them multiply their wealth.

We need popular agitations to prevent criminalisation of politics. Let us demand that in the next general elections, no party should give ticket to those facing criminal charges.

I was shocked on reading the report. Those with criminal cases pending against them cut across political parties, including the BJP and the JD(U). What a shame!

I am sure the situation is no better in other States. We should bow our heads in shame for electing such leaders to power. Instead of shedding crocodile tears over the Delhi gang rape, all parties should make their MPs and MLAs facing charges of heinous crimes resign, and ensure that people do not lose confidence in the political system.
