The Supreme Court ruling upholding a Bombay High Court judgment, striking down an order passed by the Maharashtra government banning dance by girls in bars and restaurants with less than three-star status, is short-sighted. I am sure it will be received with disappointment and cynicism by many. The ill-effects of such activities on the public should not be ignored. The issue should be viewed in its entirety.

The ban imposed by the Maharashtra government was flawed, lopsided and prejudicial. Hence it could not stand legal scrutiny. It was the State’s ostrich mindset which made is close its eyes to dancing in hotels and clubs while coming down heavily on dancing in bars.
Does only dancing in bars corrupt young minds? What about alcohol, soft porn in movies, Internet and crude dancing in all other public places? It is people’s mindset that needs to be cleansed before rushing to impose one-sided bans and controls.
