Autonomy for the CBI

It is ironic that the Congress is now directing its ire at the Central Bureau of Investigation (“The garb of policy-making,” Nov. 14). There seems to be a misplaced view that if the CBI is granted autonomy, it might misuse it. However, considering the way the agency has allowed itself to be manoeuvred all these years, it is worth taking the risk. One can be sure that the judiciary will be watching and will step in if things go wrong.

The so-called “caged parrot” seems to be moving towards a dungeon. After its existence was challenged by the Gauhati High Court, and the Prime Minister and a senior Minister gently reminded it on how to proceed in investigation, it seems to be getting tougher for the agency to perform even its defined duties.
