Asghar’s passing

The demise of Asghar Ali Engineer is a great loss, which cannot be compensated. His writings gave rise to healthy debates across disciplines. Moving away from a communalist historiographical discourse, he emphasised the true worth of unity in diversity in his writings and lectures.

The renowned Islamic scholar and progressive thinker was perhaps the first person from his community to raise his voice strongly against female circumcision. He called this custom a violation of human rights. He was a true reformist who feared none. His works earned him great respect from other communities too.
