A vote for the Tories

May 11, 2015 12:28 am | Updated 12:28 am IST

The victory of the Tories has belied all exit poll predictions of a hung Parliament (Editorial, May 9). The surprise win now gives David Cameron the chance to look at engagement with the European Union and also try and save Scotland. For India, it can only be heartening that Asians and Indians will form the face of the new government. Trade between these two nations can improve by leaps and bounds. Sectors like food, health, medicine, education, insurance, global warming, IT and culture all need a growth impetus.

The win has come as a major surprise. However, the surge of the Scottish National Party once again raises possibilities of a demand for a second referendum. Mr. Cameron’s last stint saw great engagement with India. One hopes that it increases substantially in his new term.

The resounding win is heartening news for New Delhi because Mr. Cameron has always held India in high regard. His liberal views and a soft corner for Asians have also opened a new chapter in India-Britain relations for the better.

India-U.K. ties have experienced several highs and lows, but they are not like what they used to be earlier. With its economic liberalisation, India is a different country. India does not stand to gain much economically from the U.K. when compared to what it gains from France and Germany. The growing Indian diaspora in Britain is so huge that it was only pragmatic that Mr. Cameron had to quote “ abki baar Cameron sarkar ” in order to appeal to them. Thus in these present times, the tide has turned for India, to being one of equals.
