A past worth exploring

The farrago of racial characteristics found in the skeletons excavated at Adichanallur presents a complex anthropological conundrum that demands answers (‘Ground Zero’ page, “The ghosts of Adichanallur”, January 13). If the theory that the skeletal remains found could be from a cemetery for foreigners, then Adichanallur gains unique importance. Given the success of the earlier rounds of excavation, more extensive fieldwork is likely to yield rich anthropological treasures. If the excavations reveal an ancient Tamil civilisation at Adichanallur, Indian archaeology would be that much more enriched and pave new ways to understand the country’s glorious past.
