The very survival of Cuba in the midst of a crippling economic blockade and attempts to change the political character of the country for decades speaks of the political will and ideological commitment of the people of the country (“U.S.-Cuba historic détente wins global plaudits,” Dec.19). Cuba has shown the way for all of Latin America to challenge the hegemony of the U.S. in that region. Cuba’s achievements in the health sector need to be taken as a prime lesson by all countries of the world.

The report reminded one of an article that appeared earlier, that showed that Cubans have played an outstanding role wherever there have been large-scale disasters. Cuba’s successful health-care system has been made possible mainly due to encouragement by Fidel Castro to build a quality system. The U.S. must actually take lessons from Cubans.

For India, Cuba must be taken as a prime example on how to create quality health professionals. As far as the Cubans go, they can use medical tourism to get around American sanctions because there is a long queue of those wanting to collaborate with them. The Cuban health contingent should be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize as its work has ensured the relevance of the WHO and as it has imparted a healing touch in many parts of the world.
