WikiLeaks’ role

As rightly stated by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (“WikiLeaks cables “inspired” anti-corruption campaign in India”, April 11), Anna Hazare's success in making the Centre accept his demands on the Lokpal Bill can be attributed to The Hindu spreading the anti-corruption message by publishing the WikiLeaks cables on a variety of subjects, most importantly the cash-for-vote scam. Any new law to prevent corruption can be effective only if the provisions are simple, without cumbersome processes, and with a timeframe for charging offenders and delivering verdicts on corruption cases.

Julian Assange’s statement that the WikiLeaks helped mobilise public opinion in India and started a Gandhian movement against corruption is correct. Credit should go to The Hindu for publishing the cables and galvanising the youth against corruption, which gave such a groundswell of support to Anna Hazare.
