Welcome decision

May 27, 2010 11:10 pm | Updated 11:10 pm IST

The Air India management's decision — taken with the full support of Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel — to sack 17 employees is welcome. Considering the already beaten image of the airline plagued by continuing financial problems and the recent Mangalore air tragedy, this was not the appropriate time to go on a flash strike. The Ministry's stand sends a clear signal to the strikers that unless they cooperate the airline will be headed for doom.

The way the Air India management handled the situation is noteworthy. Whatever the reasons, the strikers cannot leave thousands of passengers stranded for no fault of theirs.

The management has done well in taking a tough stand. The airline is notorious for flight delays and unsatisfactory service and travellers will now think twice before flying Air India. .
