The stance of Andhra Pradesh MLAs, especially Cabinet members, supporting the public demand for the appointment of Jagan Mohan Reddy as Chief Minister is rather strange. Jagan is a political novice and cannot be expected to administer the vast State ably. Only a senior and experienced leader can run the administration and execute the various schemes initiated by his father, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. If the Congress MLAs want the departed leader’s legacy carried forward, they should give up their confrontationist stance and abide by the party high command’s decision.

The unruly behaviour of Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s supporters is shocking. The Congress high command’s stern message is of little effect in the absence of action against those responsible for indiscipline. Jagan himself should respond to the incidents responsibly.

This refers to reports that the Andhra Pradesh government plans to build a memorial for YSR at Pavuralagutta, in the heart of the dense virgin forests of Nallamalla in Kurnool. Since YSR’a plane crashed there, Pavuralagutta has become a pilgrim centre for his supporters. On Friday, thousands thronged the forest to pay homage to YSR, disrupting the eco-friendly atmosphere there. Many irrigation projects, colleges, roads and buildings are being named after YSR. What is the need for a memorial in the forest? The government should defer a decision on the issue till the euphoria dies down.
