Srinagar visit

The move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (“ >Modi to spend Diwali in flood-hit Srinagar ,” Oct.22) is a gimmick and it has been done with an eye on the coming Assembly elections. If Mr. Modi was really interested in sharing the burden and misery of the flood-affected people, he should have gone to the northeast, where devastating floods have caused greater loss than what has occurred in Kashmir. Even the media have ignored the plight of the northeast.

The decision by Mr. Modi to visit the Siachen Glacier as well is welcome. This is a place of extreme climatic conditions and where the Indian Army is battling the odds to help ensure our territorial integrity. Our brave soldiers there don’t get to enjoy a Sunday off or celebrate a holiday or a festival. On duty thousands of miles away from their families, their only concern is to defend our land from those cunning enemies. Mr. Modi’s visit will help boost their morale.
