Outrage in Delhi

This refers to the report, “ >Delhi rape: driver held ” (Dec.8). There is no use blaming the law-enforcement agencies for what has happened as it is practically impossible to maintain surveillance in every place round-the-clock. The fact is that the driver had a criminal bent of mind. There have also been suggestions after the incident to employ women as drivers. But what is the guarantee that when they drive they will be safe? The whole issue boils down to how a person is brought up. The media, especially the electronic media, appear to be on the rampage attacking the government, the police and politicians. How about pointing fingers at the parents of the driver?

How many more rapes will it take before such acts truly awaken the conscience of this nation? This incident raises many uncomfortable questions: who should be punished? The cab driver? Or the cab company? Why is there still no fear of the law? An innocent soul has already been punished for no fault of hers. How can a momentary feeling of lust overcome all civilisational and cultural norms? Who can a woman really trust? She is not safe at home either as there are predators in the form of relatives, neighbours, friends and even passers-by.
