The appointment of a special envoy on Jammu and Kashmir by the Organisation of Islamic Conference does not surprise those who have been following the political and social manoeuvres of Pakistan in West Asia and within the OIC. In spite of millions of Indians sweating it out in the Gulf and India’s unequivocal support to Palestine, Arab nations do not consider India a close friend, particularly when it comes to India-Pakistan issues.
The pressure tactics of the OIC and its contact group on Kashmir once again prove the inefficiency of our diplomacy at international forums. With Pakistan and the separatist leaders lobbying the U.N. for a special envoy on Kashmir, Indian diplomacy is facing its most crucial test.

The appointment of a special envoy by the OIC is a blatant violation of the understanding between India and Pakistan. After prolonged dialogue and discussions, both countries recognised and agreed that the Kashmir issue should be resolved bilaterally. This understanding is the basis of our relations. New Delhi should tell Islamabad that the latest development will derail the peace process.

India is capable of looking after its people, including Kashmiris. A religious body cannot interfere in an internal Indian issue. I am appalled at India’s response which is far from assertive and bold.

How can a national issue receive fair treatment at the hands of a religious body? The OIC’s move of appointing a special envoy on Kashmir is a threat to our sovereignty and integrity. The separatist forces in Kashmir should be crushed before they destroy our unity and integrity.
