No good guys

The article “Why there were no good guys in 2003” (April 19) made interesting reading. That “weapons of mass destruction” were the excuse for imperialist powers to launch an attack on Iraq for geo-political and economic reasons was pointed out by the Left and progressive movements the world over in 1993 itself. The disastrous military power unleashed against innocent civilians, children and the centuries-old heritage is unpardonable.

There were a few good guys who questioned the deceitful plan to invade Iraq. But these voices of sanity were drowned out in the frenzied cacophony of imperialist jingoism. The military-industrial complex in the U.S. has had a disproportionate influence over policymaking.

The invasion of Iraq has raised some uncomfortable but significant questions. If democracy can be so easily hijacked by vested interests how can it be superior to other models of government as claimed?
