NGO audit

January 11, 2017 11:52 pm | Updated 11:52 pm IST

The report, “SC orders audit of 30 lakh NGOs” (Jan.11), comes as a rude shock. The involvement of as many as 30 lakh defaulting NGOs in a country where the common man has to struggle hard to make both ends meet is condemnable. Many NGOs proclaim themselves to be the moral guardians of society and come up with programmes that they want us to contribute to. The mysterious part in all this is that there is no proper machinery in the country to lawfully regulate their activities and spending practices. There needs to be a law to see that NGOs do not escape the tax net.
