It is shocking to have former Supreme Court judge Justice Markandey Katju level unwarranted and untenable statements about the Supreme Court’s credibility and authority (“SC ruling on Lodha panel unconstitutional: Katju”, Aug.8). One hopes that the respected judge is not becoming more of a headline grabber. His suggestions may only lead to endless litigation. It is apt to implement the recommendations quickly.

With cash-rich BCCI taking on board Justice Katju, it is a foregone conclusion that it is not keen on toeing the line with respect to the Supreme Court’s directives. As an ardent cricket lover, one hopes that the Supreme Court does not get swayed by all this and is able to put the BCCI in its place.

What Justice Katju has observed is provocative and dangerous. What needs attention first is the attitude of the BCCI and its reluctance to observe the diktats of the Supreme Court. That the cricketing body thought it fit to form a panel headed by Justice Katju to find ways and means to avoid compliance with the court’s order reeks of arrogance and portends an extremely dangerous trend if not dealt with firmly and decisively.
The Supreme Court cannot be reduced to a level where it is referred to with derogatory nomenclature. Of late, there seems to be a concerted move within the nation by some vested interests to question the decisions of respected organs and institutions of the state.

Justice Katju’s first salvo only signifies that the respected judge is readying himself for a long legal battle on behalf of his client. He has never been known to mince his words but his sally against the top court and its ruling might well turn out into a full-fledged war. Will the efforts of the Lodha Committee to clean the Augean stables and put cricket back on the pedestal where it belongs run into rough weather?
