Immigrants’ issue

This has reference to the article on the policy of the British National Party and Nick Griffin who call for the repatriation of all immigrants to the countries of their origin (Oct. 28). Sure, they can be sent back if, in their baggage, Mr. Griffin can pack all the wealth looted by the British Empire from its colonies over centuries. We will take the Indians back — along with the Koh-i-noor, the Crystal throne of the last Mughal, his gold crown, the jewelled Huma bird from Tipu’s throne, just to mention a few. What about adding the price of the crafts destroyed, and compensation for wiping out one of the best education systems, a way of life, a culture and a civilisation older than any other? What about the price of the legacy of tearing apart a nation into two? The price of the bloody aftermath? And the price of a war which has gone on for decades and led to many conflicts around the world?

Though discrimination on the basis of race or class or ethnicity in any country is deplorable, one fails to understand the logic inherent in the article. The whites in Britain have every right to resent the denial of their livelihood or opportunities by immigrants, whatever their colour. It is ironical that every incident against Indians is interpreted as racist.
