How ‘Smart’?

July 29, 2016 12:13 am | Updated October 18, 2016 12:37 pm IST

While the Smart City project seems to be a good measure for urban development, there are a few issues that need to be sorted out. (“Fooled by smartness”, July 28). There is apprehension that the project will further segregate the poor. There is also a perception that such a city will lead to an increase in the cost of living, further affecting the lives of the marginalised. Such projects could also create more space for neoliberal policies to prosper which means giving only the urban economy more priority. Therefore, it is important that the government focusses on development with models that are compatible with our social needs.
