Holiday

September 05, 2009 02:01 am | Updated 02:01 am IST

The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to declare a general holiday on Friday under the Negotiable Instruments Act as a mark of respect to YSR was surprising. We lost precious time, man-hours, and commerce, especially because the holiday preceded a weekend. The best way to pay tribute to the departed leader would have been to give an hour’s break and work hard to realise his dreams. The holiday hardly served the purpose — people spent time in cinemas, restaurants and other outings.

No doubt, YSR’s unexpected death is an irreparable loss. But the declaration of a general holiday created a lot of inconvenience to the common man. All State government activities and banking operations came to a standstill because of the unscheduled holiday.
