It is a fact that many people are quite uninterested about what they are doing as a profession (‘Open Page’ – “Going ‘yellow collar’, and doing what your heart tells you”, July 26). This has its roots in youngsters from the middle class being forced to take up subjects and professions they are least interested in. The pressure of the family to “do well in life” based on stereotypes is to blame. I am a final-year undergraduate student who is still confused about the postgraduate degree I wish to pursue. When I had a dream career in mind, people around me discouraged me. Parents need to look at their own lives and understand the boundary between passion and a career. The lives of great personalities should be examples.
