A mockery

Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist caught alive during the Mumbai attacks, is taking full advantage of our system. He was caught in the act and must have thought he would be given the death penalty soon after. Much to his surprise, that did not happen. He decided to make a mockery of the system itself.

He is being treated like a prisoner of war. One wonders what stops us from taking a quick decision. Kasab will soon call himself an Indian and we may even start a serious debate in the media.

Kasab has taken our country for granted. He has taken the patience of our people, the spirit of Indian democracy and the rule of law for granted.

No country other than India would have given him more freedom than what he is enjoying here after striking terror and getting caught in the act.

The terrorist caught alive on 26/11 has cracked the joke of the year saying he is not the man seen in the CCTV footage at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus during the attacks and that he saw an AK-47 for the first time only after he was taken into police custody.

By changing his statements every other day, Kasab is taking us for a ride. One hopes the farce will end soon and he will be given the punishment he deserves. It should act as a deterrent to those who plan to attack India.

I think Kasab has understood the Indian criminal justice system well and is prepared to face the investigators.

Even if he is sentenced to death, the chances of his going to the gallows are remote. When we cannot handle a case in which we have incriminating evidence against a perpetrator on our own soil, it is laughable that we have asked for the custody of David Coleman Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana.

The whole world had seen the video footage of Kasab on a shooting spree and witnesses have testified to his murderous act. Even the worst criminal does not admit to his crimes, given the urge to survive at any cost. It is a pity that our criminal justice system is such that even hardcore criminals get princely treatment, much to the heartburn of the law-abiding citizenry.
