With early trends indicating good show by BJP in Uttar Pradesh, the party on Tuesday said it took up issues which were not “sensational” even as it gave credit to Nitin Gadkari for the performance.

The party also said “negating” voters did not help the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to exit polls, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said numbers will speak “much more than savvy analysis.”

“The party campaign was not deliberately kept low key. We took issues which were not sensational...governance has to be the agenda,” Ms. Sitharaman said, adding that she would prefer to wait for final results before making an elaborate comment.

To a poser on whether BJP will credit its president Nitin Gadkari for its performance, she said “absolutely” the credit will go “entirely” to him.

Asked whether the absence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was behind the performance of the party, she said none of the BJP CMs came for campaigning.
