Activist Mugilan produced before magistrate in Karur

Remanded in judicial custody for 15 days in rape case

Environmental activist T. Mugilan alias Shanmugam, was produced before the Judicial Magistrate - I in Karur early on July 10 and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days in a rape case.

The CB-CID police, who had arrested Mr. Mugilan in connection with a complaint of rape by a woman, brought him from Chennai by road after obtaining a transit warrant. He was taken straight to the magistrate’s residence at around 2.30 a.m.

The magistrate remanded Mr. Mugilan in judicial custody and the activist was later taken to Tiruchi Central Prison.

The Kulithalai police in Karur district had registered a case against Mr. Mugilan under Section 376 (rape), 417 (cheating) of the IPC and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act based on the complaint lodged by the woman. The case was later transferred to the CB-CID.

Mr. Mugilan was reportedly spotted at the Tirupati railway station on July 6, almost six months after he went missing. He was brought to Katpadi, Vellore, by the Railway Protection Force and arrested by the CB-CID on July 7.
