Like clockwork, the spell of rain on Sunday was followed by water-logged roads and traffic jams across the city, thus, exposing the civic agencies’ lack of preparedness for the monsoon, which is less than 10 days away.

From the outer circle of Connaught Place to Jangpura in South Delhi and other parts of the Capital, commuters were caught in traffic after the moderate showers. Though the streets were water-logged in almost entire central Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council said only one complaint was received from Tees January Marg. However, several arterial roads, including the outer circle of Connaught Place, were submerged in knee-deep water.

“The traffic was moving extremely slow. Since it was a Sunday, the volume of traffic was not very high or else it would have caused long traffic snarls,” said Dinkar Sharma, a shopkeeper in Central Delhi.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s control rooms recieved 14 complaints of water-logging and five fallen trees after the dust storm.

In South Delhi, water-logging was reported from Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura and Nizamudddin.

A total of 11 complaints were received by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. The East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s control rooms received nine complaints of water-logging and one of a fallen tree.
