VHP leader gets bail in Naroda Patiya case

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted bail of seven days to Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Babu Bajrangi, convicted in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case.

Mr. Bajrangi will be released from August 9 to 16 for eye treatment , special public prosecutor Prashant Desai told The Hindu .

“Owing to diabetes, Mr. Bajrangi lost vision in one eye. In the other eye too, he has lost 60 per cent vision,” Mr. Bajrangi’s lawyer Pravin Gondaliya said. This is the second time he has been granted bail.

In August 2012, a special SIT court sentenced Mr. Bajrangi, along with former State Minister Maya Kodnani and 30 others, to 28 years imprisonment for their role in the communal violence that took place in the Naroda Patiya locality of Ahmedabad during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The High Court recently granted bail to Ms. Kodnani on medical grounds.

In 2007, Mr. Bajrangi was caught on camera boasting of his role in the massacre in a sting operation conducted by the news magazine Tehelka .
