The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to open ‘Nirbhaya’ centres in all the districts across the State to provide prompt help to victims of crime against women. The centres will also allow lodging of FIRs by women in distress.

“Nirbhaya centres will be set up in women hospitals or women police stations with the view to providing immediate medical and other help to the victims of crime or violence against women,” an official statement quoting Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan said.

Mr. Ranjan, who on Friday chaired a high-level meeting in this regard, said a committee headed by the Chief Secretary would also be set up soon to ensure smooth running of these centres.

Similarly, nodal officers would be nominated in Home, Medical, Health and Law Departments for completing necessary works for setting up these centres, the statement said.

Mr. Ranjan further directed the officials concerned to complete the formalities for setting up Asha Jyoti Kendras in pilot districts to bring all schemes meant for empowerment of women under one umbrella. He also called for taking up awareness drives for the schemes through the State Information Department and warned that laxity in providing relief to victims and ensuring safety of women would not be tolerated.
